How do I set the default print settings in Windows or on my Mac? To set default settings for all your software, follow the steps below for your operating system. Note: When you change the print settings in your software, the change only occurs while the software is open. You will need to select the settings again the next time you open the same software. ![]() Windows • Do one of the following: • Windows 10: Click and select (Settings) > Devices > Printers & scanners. Select your printer and select Manage > Printing preferences. • Windows 8.x: Navigate to the Apps screen and select Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Devices and Printers. Right-click your printer and select Printing Preferences. • Windows 7: Click and select Devices and Printers. Right-click your printer and select Printing Preferences. • Windows Vista: Click and select Control Panel (or point to Settings and select Control Panel). Select Printer (under Hardware and Sound) or Printers. Right-click your printer and select Printing Preferences. • Windows XP: Click Start and select Control Panel (or point to Settings and select Control Panel). Select Printers and Other Hardware (if available) and then Printers and Faxes. Right-click your printer and select Printing Preferences. For instructions on changing the settings, see Changing default settings. Understanding default settings. This section describes the settings and options available in the default-setting mode. These settings are shown in the following table and explained in detail after the table. To access and change a setting, see Changing default settings. • Select the default settings you want to use. Mac • Open a document and select Print from the File menu. • Make sure your product is selected. Click the arrow next to the Printer setting or the Show Details button to expand the print window, if necessary. ![]() • Select the print settings you want to save. Note: Some options may not be saved as a preset. • Click the Presets pop-up menu and select Save As or Save Current Settings as Preset. • Enter a name for your preset and choose whether this preset can be used with any printer or only with the currently selected printer. Once a preset has been selected, it will be selected automatically in the print dialog for future print jobs until another preset is selected. To revert to the default print settings, select Default Settings from the Presets pop-up menu. If you don't want to create a preset and simply want to print with the last print settings you selected, select Last Used Settings in the Presets pop-up menu. You can configure the following settings: I. Page Setup • From an application such as Apple TextEdit, click File and Page Setup. • Make sure the Brother machine is selected next to Format for. • Select the desired Paper Size, Orientation, and Scale. Printer Driver Settings •. • After you change any settings, If you want to save the current settings, you will need to save it as a preset. Mac OS X 10.5.8, v10.6.x: Click on Standard next to Presets then select Save As. Type a name for this preset and click OK. Each time the Print window is opened, click Standard next to Presets and select the name of the Preset you wish to use. Mac OS X 10.7x or greater: Click on Default Settings next to Presets then select Save Current Settings as a Preset. Type a name for this preset and click OK. This will be the default setting each time you print. Print Settings Click on the drop menu ( Copies & Pages or the name of the application) and click on Print Settings. • Media Type: To achieve the best print results, the media being printed on should be selected in the driver. The machine changes the way it prints depending on the selected media type. • Plain Paper (recommended for 20 - 28 lb paper) • Thin Paper (recommended for 16 - 20 lb paper) • Thick Paper (recommended for heavier weight or rough paper) • Thicker Paper (recommended for heavier weight or rough paper) • Bond Paper • Envelopes • Env. Thick (recommended if the toner is not fixed to the envelope) • Env. Thin (recommended if the envelope is crumpled) • Recycled Paper • Label • Resolution: You can choose the resolution as follows: • 300 dpi • 600 dpi • HQ 1200 • 1200 dpi • Paper Source: You can choose: • Auto Select • Tray 1 • Tray 2 (available if the optional tray is installed, standard on HL5470DWT and HL6180DWT) • MP Tray • Manual IV. Advanced Print Settings Click the triangle mark next to Advanced to display the advanced print settings.
